Headache Management

Physiotherapy can assist in the management of headache and migraine by addressing musculoskeletal dysfunction in your neck, upper back and shoulders.

All of our staff at Atlas Sports Physiotherapy have been taught by Dean Watson, a well recognised leader in Headache Management. At Atlas our management of headache and migraine involves:

  • Explaining the role disorders of the neck can have in the headache and migraine process
  • A detailed history, including mapping out the area of headache and analysing the behavior of symptoms
  • A physical examination of your neck which includes assessment of the movement of the upper three spinal segments

Temporary reproduction of headache is one of the key diagnostic features of neck involvement. However it is important to remember that this alone is not enough to confirm that the neck is the cause of a headache or migraine. There needs to be a corresponding reduction in headache symptoms with correction of the upper spinal segment dysfunction.

Correction of dysfunction usually comprises passive movement techniques. These are applied in a sustained fashion to gradually release spinal structures (capsules, ligaments and muscles). In order to maintain a healthy spine exercises to stretch and strengthen muscles may need to be performed, along with alteration in posture. Our headache management does not involve manipulation or ‘cracking’ of the neck.

At Atlas we expect positive changes in your headache or migraine symptoms within 4-6 treatments and if this has not occurred then it is unlikely further treatment will be successful.
